If the Los Angeles Lakers are going to acquire Anthony Davis before the NBA‘s Feb. 7 trade deadline, it’s clear it will take some convincing.

On Thursday, ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe reported New Orleans Pelicans general manager Dell Demps hadn’t returned any phone calls from Lakers GM Rob Pelinka since Davis’ trade request went public Monday. Later Thursday, Wojnarowski reported that the two teams had made contact and would likely talk again before the deadline.

Demps’ delayed response to the Lakers is the latest wrinkle in a situation that could drag on into the summer.

Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, told Wojnarowski on Monday his client has requested a trade after informing New Orleans‘ front office he won’t sign a contract extension.

Wojnarowski and Lowe noted the Pelicans “see no reason to deliver Davis to the Lakers in a deal with a full season left on his contractnever mind do it on a timeline that benefits mostly the objectives of Los Angeles and Davis.”

During Tuesday’s episode of First Take on ESPN, Stephen A. Smith reported San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich told Demps “don’t cave” when the Lakers call about Davis.

Demps may have taken a different approach altogether by dragging his feet.

New Orleans doesn’t have to feel pressured to deal Davis right now. He’s signed through next season, allowing the Pelicans to wait until the summer when more teams will have additional cap space to get involved in trade discussions for one of the NBA’s best players.
