Trump and Kim’s nuke summit ends with no agreement

President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un abruptly ended their summit in Vietnam hours early Thursday, after failing to strike a nuclear deal. “Sometimes you have to walk,” Trump told reporters after two days of meeting with Kim. He said he was not willing to accept the North Korean leader’s demand that the United States end all economic sanctions on the nation before it committed to a specific denuclearization plan. Despite the impasse, Trump continued to praise Kim, calling him “quite a guy and quite a character,” and saying that there still was a lot of “warmth” in his relationship with a man many regard as a brutal dictator. Trump said he hoped that U.S. and North Korean negotiators would keep talking.

Cohen to conclude congressional testimony after day of drama

President Donald Trump’s longtime attorney Michael Cohen will make a final appearance before Congress Thursday, a day after he labeled his former boss as “a con man” and “racist” during a public testimony about his dealings with Trump. In a dramatic hearing before a House committee, Cohen asserted that Trump knew in advance that WikiLeaks planned to release stolen emails damaging to political rival Hillary Clinton, and that the president indirectly encouraged him to lie to Congress about his pursuit of a potentially lucrative Trump Tower development in Moscow. On Thursday, Cohen will testify at a closed session of the House intelligence panel, which plans to focus questioning on Russian interference in the 2016 election.

US pedestrian deaths expected to reach highest number since 1990

Pedestrian deaths are expected to reach their highest level since 1990 as of last year, a new study released Thursday finds. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 6,227 pedestrian deaths occurred in 2018 — up from 4,109 in 2009 and an increase of 4 percent from the 5,977 in 2017.  The GHSA received preliminary data from State Highway Safety Offices in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The data are based on the first six months of 2018 — and the GHSA created its projections based on anticipated underreporting and historic trends of pedestrian fatalities in the first and second halves of the year.

Kentucky teachers’ group to protest pension board proposal

Kentucky’s largest school system will be forced to shut down Thursday after thousands of teachers called in sick as part of a statewide “sickout.” The closures come after a grassroots group urged teachers to travel to Frankfort, the state capital, to protest of a bill that would restructure the board that oversees the state’s teacher pension system. Earlier this month, teachers across West Virginia went on strike, sparking a movement that spread to other red states, including Oklahoma and Arizona, and then, this year, to Los Angeles and Denver

Hundreds flee as record rainfall swamps northern California

Rivers swollen by days of heavy rain inundated portions of northern California this week, forcing hundreds to abandon their homes. However, about half of the 4,000 people ordered to leave are refusing to do so. Those who decided to stay stocked up on food and drinking water. Two towns — Guerneville and Monte Rio — were islands surrounded by water, local officials said. The only way to reach the two communities now is by boat. The swollen Russian River could crest at its highest level in about 25 years before Thursday.
