New York Knicks fans apparently weren’t the only ones disappointed when the team ended up with the No. 3 pick in the NBA draft lottery.
According to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, presumptive No. 1 pick Zion Williamson was rooting for the Knicks to get the top spot so he could end up in New York.
He reportedly “quickly” left the room after the New Orleans Pelicans were announced as the lottery winners, gaining the first overall pick.
New Orleans had just a 6 percent chance of gaining the No. 1 pick, compared to a 14 percent chance for New York as the team with the NBA’s worst record.
Interestingly, the former Duke star could have been headed to the Pelicans even if the Knicks had won the lottery. According to Shams Charania of Stadium, New York might have packaged the first overall selection in a trade for Anthony Davis:

Charania also reported Davis still wants a trade out of the organization even though Williamson is likely to join the roster.
The good news? The incoming rookie will likely get a chance to start his career alongside other talented young players, though the specifics depend on who is part of a return for Davis.
On the other hand, Williamson could have been a star in one of the biggest markets in the country if he had landed with the Knicks. After they’d gone six years without a playoff appearance, he also could have been somewhat of a savior for the organization—a rare homegrown player who generates excitement.
The team also has plenty of cap space to potentially add some big-name free agents, so New York could have turned things around in a hurry.
Now, the forward will likely have to wait and see what happens with New Orleans.
